Your financial support saves lives! In 2020, WERLA cared for more than 1,100 animals. The need for wildlife rehabilitation and conservation education has increased at a rapid rate in recent years. Now, more than ever, wildlife rehabilitation and education is crucial to the health of our world. The average cost for our facility to provide these services is approximately $130 per day or $40 per animal. Last year, fundraising efforts covered a little more than half of these costs. Without generous donations from caring community members and businesses, WERLA will struggle to continue providing wildlife rehabilitation and conservation efforts.
So what is the actual work that WERLA does? WERLA has removed hooks and foreign objects from animals, provided medical care for head trauma, assisted with mending broken bones, and raised countless species of baby animals after being displaced or abandoned, only to name a few. We see all Louisiana species coming through our doors, such as owls, hawks, raccoons, skunks, foxes, coyotes, squirrels, opossums, beavers, rabbits, songbirds, water fowl, turtles, and yes, even American Bald Eagles. Many times WERLA is able to save the lives of animals that otherwise may not have a chance at rehabilitation and freedom.
Volunteers and staff at WERLA look into the eyes of wildlife every day, and are driven to do everything possible to help save these majestic animals. Louisiana's wildlife is worth saving, and funding for WERLA's organization is crucial to the services we provide. "If you are an animal lover this place is incredible! My wife found an abandoned baby squirrel that she was determined to save. Problem is we have no knowledge on how to care for a 2-week old squirrel. She called WERLA and they accepted the squirrel to foster and mentor back into its natural habitat.
