We rescue and rehome approximately 400 dogs and puppies each year and work tirelessly to find a good outcome for those we cannot take! Most of our animals come from puppy mill and backyard breeder operations. We have an insider who works with these mills to encourage surrendering of those being housed despite not being able to produce any longer. Most come to us in horrific condition, both medically, physically and behaviorally. These are not "turn-around" dogs. Many stay with us for weeks or months as we address medical and behavioral issues. Sadly, for some, we are their final home. Other dogs come to us from open-intake kill shelters in and around Northwest Louisiana, owner-surrender and some strays. Many come from abuse and neglect situations. We provide vetting, socialization, and via our more than 50 EXPERIENCED volunteers, we provide healing of mind, body and soul. Our goal is to find each animal the "right" home, not just "a" home and we are NOT a first-come, first-serve rescue!
We are huge spay/neuter advocates and require that of our adopters and volunteers too. The only way to decrease the overpopulation problem in our area is through spay/neuter education! We are different than any other shelter in this area as our shelter is a converted home to better prepare the animals for their forever home. They don't know they live in a shelter! We hear time and time again from visitors... "these dogs live better than mine!".
Additionally, we offer the Rainbow Bridge program, an alternative to animal control when low-income pet owners cannot afford to have their elderly, ill and suffering pet euthanized. Through the Rainbow Bridge Program, pet owners attempting to surrender their pets to animal control have the option of taking their pets to our vet for humane euthanasia, paid entirely by NR2R. This option allows pet owners to stay with their pet as they cross the Rainbow Bridge, which is not offered through animal control.
We also visit our local municipal shelter every week and take pictures of the dogs and cats to upload to social media to get the public and rescue groups engaged in helping the animals at the shelter whether through adoption or rescue.
We impact the lives of so many... four-legged and two-legged alike... whether adopting a little dog to a person suffering the loss of a pet... or taking in a pet of an owner who has passed away or who has gone into a nursing home. Every time we rescue a pet... there is a human component.
We have NO paid staff. EVERYONE involved in our rescue is a volunteer! EVERYONE! When you donate, all monies go to towards the care of the animals. We rely solely on generous donations of the community. We receive no city, parish or federal funds. Our vet bill averages $7,000 EACH MONTH and through your support we are able to continue our mission. Please keep us in your charitable thoughts during Give for Good AND all year-round. To rescue, provide shelter, and rehome primarily small-breed dogs; to provide assistance to pet owners needing to rehome their pet if we are unable to take; to assist open-intake municipal shelters with urgent-care animals; assist Bossier City Animal Services in networking their animals by uploading to social media; to provide occasional veterinary care assistance to low-income pet owners and to provide responsible pet ownership education.
