Hi! Do you see the beautiful dog on the logo above? That's me. My name is Sassy and I lived a long time at the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana. They took me in after I had been kicked in the head by a horse, resulting in brain trauma. I had "imaginary" friends whom I played with at HSNWLA. I was adopted a couple of times, but I missed my real and imaginary friends. I was only truly happy while I was Queen Sassy at HSNWLA. Speaking of "Queen", did you know that I was royalty? Yep. I was the 2022 Queen of Barkus and Meoux. Sadly, my health began to decline and I was in chronic pain. My family of volunteers shed many tears over having to let me go, but I let them know that it was time. I was surrounded by my friends, both 2-legged and my "imaginary" 4-legged friends, when I saw the rainbow bridge ahead of me. I gathered all my strength and bolted across it, feeling like a pup again. I looked back and saw so many people crying over letting me go. They may not know it, but I quietly walked back and gave them each one last kiss and said "thank you" for all the years of love, ear scratches, pup cups, and rides to see the Christmas lights. You see, living at HSNWLA was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. I was loved unconditionally, just like the hundreds of other dogs that have come through the rescue.
Let me tell you a little about HSNWLA. They are all volunteers. No one gets paid (unless you count tail wags and smooches) as payment. They get no government funding either. They are able to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome dogs all because of community support and donations. These donations pay for our food, treats, toys, vet visits, heartworm prevention, flea & tick prevention, and any medical treatment or surgeries needed. The volunteers have several fundraisers every year to help generate money to take care of us. Our big events are Black Dog October, a dog wash, and bingo nights. The volunteers are like a family and I am so grateful to have been a part of that family for most of my life.
Thank you for letting an O.G. (ha ha, that sounds better than a once old, crippled girl) have a moment to talk about the Humane Society of Northwest Louisiana. Because of you, they are able to rescue on!!

I am a current volunteer and I just love how everyone is so invested in all of these babies (young and old). We spend our free time helping these pups. The joy you get when each one is adopted. I look forward all week to the one day I volunteer, I would be there everyday if I could. The animals all get new bedding, new toys, playtime, spoiling by volunteers and treats daily. It is such a pleasure to be able to help this great organization.

They are wonderful. We adopted a husky mix puppy from them on Oct. 31. They stayed late just for us because we were traveling a long distance to get him. They truly care about the well being of these animals. Unfortunately our puppy came down with a case of kennel cough that we noticed a few days after bringing him home. The HSNWLA was great about taking care of all vet and medical fees for us! We are so happy with our puppy and with the volunteers at HSNWLA!

Everyone was so helpful. From the time our application was submitted to the time we were able to take our babies home they kept us informed every step of the way on what was happening. Thank you so much.

Amazing organization that truly helps the animals they care for. I adopted a puppy from them 7 years ago and she is still one of my best friends. She goes everywhere she can with me. My son just adopted a puppy from them and he is awesome.

I have been looking to rescue and fell in love with Pax over social media and just had to adopt him and give him the furrrever home he deserved:). I live in Georgia and the volunteers made it the seamless easiest thing to do....they were also very quick to respond and made the whole process a delight:) I am so thankful and so is my family that they allowed us to take home and take care of our new baby boy Pax. I can't express enough the gratitude for everything and how well taken care of these animals are and how loving and wonderful the volunteers are. Just can't express it enough!!!+ PLEASE ADOPT AND SAVE SOME LIVES!!!!!

This is a fabulous organization! The volunteers are fantastic and work from the heart. The animals are 'tucked in' each night with great love and a treat.
I adopted a beautiful 7 year old pup and she is a total joy to the family.

Awesome experience adopting our puppy! Even after we got her home and she started not feeling well they had us take her to the emergency vet and covered the cost. They also followed up to be sure she was doing well afterwards. Courtney was amazing! Highly recommend checking out the Humane Society when looking for a new pet.
