Honoring the Everlasting Gift of Donation
As the federally designated organ and tissue recovery organization for the state of Louisiana, LOPA plays a vital role in the transplantation process. From facilitating organ and tissue donation to providing resources and support to grieving families, the agency works to make sure every gift of donation has the greatest impact.
LOPA's core purpose of MAKING LIFE HAPPEN is directly tied to increasing awareness about the lifesaving gift of donation. The fact is that one donor has the potential to save eight lives, and with over 114,000 people on the transplant waiting list, the need for organs is critical. An average of 144 people is added to the transplant list each day. During the same time period, 20 patients who are on that list who will die waiting.
In October 2018, LOPA opened its Donor Care Center in Covington. The 65,000-sq.-ft. facility is one of nine such centers in the United States. Its fully-integrated clinical area features three separate donor recovery suites, diagnostic capabilities and a laboratory allowing for more timely recoveries, which benefit both donor families and recipients.
LOPA is a source of healing and comfort to donor families. In addition to recognition events and memorials, the agency offers ongoing grief counseling, support groups, and workshops for families who wish to communicate with recipients of their loved one's gifts. LOPA also manages the Louisiana Donor Registry, a database of individuals who have expressed their decision to become organ, tissue, and eye donors.
